Time to Face the Falcons

November 8, 2008

Colorado State is heading down to Colorado Springs to play against the Air Force Falcons.  Air Force has only lost two of their nine games so far this season.  They took down the Army 16 to 7 last Saturday.

The Falcons have scored nearly 100 more points than their opposition this year.  Yards off their running game far outweighs that of their passing and of their competitors.  Air Force has 2,470 yards rushing so far this year and only 679 yards passing.

Colorado State needs to play their hardest defense during the middle of the game, during the second and third quarters.  That is when the Falcons put up the majority of their points and stop their opposition.  They have scored 139 points during this time of the game to their competitors’ 68 total points during that same time period.

Seven of their running backs have put up more than 200 yards this season.  Kyle Lumpkin and Todd Newell have both gone over 400 yards.

Kick-off will be at 4 at the Air Force Academy.

Cougars Tackle Rams

November 3, 2008

Colordo State lost a heartbreaker yesterday at Hughes Stadium against BYU.  The Cougars finally put away the Rams with 22 seconds left in the game to make the final score 45 to 42.

Colorado State was the first to get points on the board with an early touchdown in the first quarter.  Max Hall fumbled the ball which was picked up and run 20 yards into the end zone by freshman linebacker Mychal Sisson.  About three minutes later, Hall threw the ball 58 yards to Austin Collie for a BYU touchdown to tie up the game.  Then with about three and a half minutes left in the first quarter, John Mosure ran the ball in to put the Rams up 14 to 7 after the first.

The second quarter continued this offensive back-and-forth play with Collie scoring a touchdown to tie the game, followed by Dion Morton catching a 32 yard pass from Billy Farris to put the Rams back on top.  The Cougars were not willing to go into the half down, though, so with 38 seconds left in the half Hall threw the ball to Collie for another BYU touchdown.  Therefore, the teams went into the half tied at 21.

The beginning of the third quarter faced little action until the seven-minute mark rolled around and produced a Colorado State touchdown.  Rashaun Greer caught a pass which made the score 28 to 21.  With about two minutes left in the quarter, the Cougars had to settle with a field goal from kicker Mitch Payne

BYU started out the fourth quarter with a quick touchdown from Dennis Pitta.  This put the Cougars in the lead 31 to 28 with 13 minutes left in the game.  Gartrell Johnson ran for seven yards to take back the lead with a little over seven minutes left to play.  Harvey Unga had an amazing 40-yard run two minutes later to put the Cougars back on top over the Rams.  Colorado State freshman Gerard Thomas intercepted the ball off of Hall which set up the Rams for their final touchdown.  With 1:44 left in the game, quarterback Billy Farris threw the ball 55 yards to Dion Morton.  The roar of the crowd would have indicated the Rams had ended the game victoriously, but the Cougars had other plans.  In only five plays, BYU had managed to drive the ball 59 yards.  The culmination of this drive was a 17-yard pass to Dennis Pitta with 22 seconds left in the game to give the Cougars their eighth win of the season.

BYU had 150 more offensive yards than the Rams, but their offensive mistakes put the Rams in good position.  Morton ended the game with six catches totaling 129 yards and two touchdowns.

The Cougars will be set to play San Diego State next weekend as the Rams head to Colorado Springs to match up agains the Air Force Falcons.

Rams Take on Cougars

October 31, 2008

Colorado State will be playing the BYU Cougars this Saturday at Hughes Stadium.  The Rams will have their work cut out for them this weekend as the Cougars have only lost one game so far this season.  They lost two weeks ago to TCU with a final of 32-7.  However, they took out UNLV last Saturday.

The Cougars have a pretty strong running and passing offensive game, but have put away over 2,400 passing yards so far this season.  They tend to dominate their opponents in the first half with a total of 162 of their points being earned in the first half compared to 64 total points put up by their competitors.

Harvey Unga is the running back the Rams need to watch out for.  He has rushed for nearly 700 yards and has scored five touchdowns.  BYU junior Austin Collie is their best wide receiver putting up 902 yards and eight touchdowns already this season.

The Rams’ defense will have to be at the top of their game especially during the first half if they hope to take down the Cougars.  Kick-off will be at 4.

Rams Defeat San Diego State

October 27, 2008

Colorado State beat the Aztecs on Saturady in California 38 to 34.  Kory Sperry put away three touchdowns off of passes from Billy Farris

With 30 seconds left in the first quarter Colorado State finally put some points on the board with a 43-yard field goal from Jason Smith.  This put the Rams behind at the start of the second since the Aztecs had a touchdown in the first.  San Diego came out strong in the second as well, with a field goal after only eight plays.   Colorado State counteracted that with a Farris to Sperry touchdown.   The Rams went into half time down with a score of 17 to 10.
The third quarter turned out to be a very exciting one.  Dion Morton ran for 12 yards at the start of the half to score a touchdown, but then Davion Mauldin of San Diego scored his own touchdown off a 93 yard kickoff return.    Another pass to Sperry tied the game at 24 with about eight minutes left in the game.  Dion Morton then ran in another touchdown to officially put the Rams ahead.  That lead did not last for long though as one minute later Atiyyah Henderson rushed for 72 yards and tied the game up, once again, at 31.
Farris threw touchdown pass number three to Sperry to start of the final quarter putting up Colorado State 38-31.  San Diego moved up the field but had to settle for a field goal which finally put the game at 38-34.
Both teams rushed for about the same amount of yards, but Colorado State made its impact by passing the ball.  Farris completed 25 of his 34 attempts which was equal to that of Ryan Lindley who was 24 of 33 attempts, but the Rams averaged nearly double the amount of yards per completion which gave them a total of 296 passing yards.
This game was very unusual for the Aztecs in comparison to the other games they have played so far this season because they had more yards rushing than they did passing.  Prior to this game they had over 1,000 more yards passing than rushing, so San Diego showed that are capable of doing both during this game.
Next Saturday San Diego will be heading to Wyoming to play the Cowboys, while Colorado State will hosting BYU at Hughes Stadium.  Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Rams Prepare for Game Against Aztecs

October 25, 2008

Colorado State will be heading to California to play against San Diego State University tomorrow night.  The Aztecs have only won one game so far this season so this should be a good game for the Rams.  They beat Idaho in week five by a final score of 45 to 17.  Last weekend, though, they faced a huge loss to New Mexico.  San Diego put their only points up on the board late in the third quarter, but that did not put a hinder the competetion’s game.  The Aztecs left Albuquerque with a final score of 70 to 7.

San Diego faced a huge loss against New Mexico

San Diego faced a huge loss against New Mexico

San Diego tends to come out of the half playing their strongest.  Overall this season, the third quarter has proven to be their most successful.  So far this season it seems as though the Aztec defense really shuts down in the fourth and seemingly gives up.  They have let 90 points go by already this season in the final quarter of the game.  The best way to take on this athletic program is to play consistently in the first half, play tough defense in the third and then bring out an intense offense in the fourth.

Unlike the previous few weeks, the Aztecs have a very strong passing game.  They have only gotten 350 yards rushing compared to the astonishing 1,600 yards passing.  Colorado State will have to keep an eye out for number 80, Vincent Brown.  This wide receiver has done the most damage against the opposition.  He has gained the most yards for the team so far and has put away for four touchdowns.

Kickoff is set to take place at 7:30, and the game will air on the Mtn.  After a loss last week to the Utes, the Rams are ready for a win.

Utes Trample Rams

October 19, 2008
Jason Smith

Jason Smith

Utah blew past the Rams in the game today with a final score of 49 to 16.  The Utes played pretty consistently scoring two touchdowns in the first, second and fourth quarter.  The put one away after the half in the third.  After Colorado State’s touchdown early on in the first, it was up to Jason Smith to give the Ram’s the rest of their points.  Smith hit a 25, 38 and 52-yard field goal, but that was not enough for Colorado State.

As what was to be expected, the Utes destroyed the Rams with their rushing offense.  They totaled 327 yards rushing to the Ram’s 110 yards.  The Utes also had more passing yards, but not nearly as many as their rushing yards.  5 of Utah’s touchdowns came from rushing, whereas, Colorado’s one touchdown was from a pass by Billy Farris  to Dion Morton.

Colorado State will be heading to San Diego State next saturday.  With Utah’s ninth consecutive win, they have just tied for the longest consecutive winning streak in the country.  They are tied with Texas Tech, and hope that they will come back strong after their bye next weekend.

Rams Hope to Give Utes First Loss

October 18, 2008

Colorado State will be heading to Utah to play the Utes tomorrow at noon.  The Utes are currently undefeated so this will be an anything but easy game.  Last week they destroyed Wyoming with a final score of 40-7.  Like Texas Christian, Utah is a very strong rushing team.  So far this season they have more than doubled their opponents total rushing yards.  That is to not take away from their passing capabilities though.  They may not pass as much as they run, but their passing abilities still remain fairly consistent.  The Utes have completed 127 of the 195 passing attempts made thus far.

Statistically Utah is very consistent in their offensive game, but they tend to have the most success on the field in the middle of the game.  The Utes have scored a large number of their overall points in the second quarter and have put the competition’s offense to a near stand-still right after the half.  Only 9 points have been scored on the Utes in the third quarter throughout this whole season.

The Rams need to watch out for Matt Asiata.  He is the Utes strongest running back and has already scored seven touchdowns this year.

Frogs Freeze Rams

October 13, 2008

Thousands of freezing fans stood by and watched TCU beat up on the Rams.  The first quarter had the most exciting moments of the game.  Colorado State was the first team to put points up on the board.  TCU fought back and scored about five minutes later.  The extra point kick by Ross Evans was blocked leaving the Rams ahead 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.  The Frogs scored a touchdown with about seven minutes left in the half which was the last time the scoreboard lit up.

As expected, TCU tore up the field in rushing yards.  They ran for 151 total yards which put the Ram’s 11 yards to shame.  CSU had 20 more yards passing than the Frogs, but it did not matter in the end.   Gartrell Johnson ran for 37 yards and scored the Ram’s only touchdown.  Billy Farris completed only five of his 11 pass attempts.  Kory Sperry led the way in receiving yards for both teams.   Marcus Jackson of TCU lead his team in rushing with 72 yards, but teammates Joseph Turner and Aaron Brown put away the two touchdowns for the Frogs.

TCU is set to face off BYU on Thursday while the Rams will be heading to Utah on Saturday.

Homecoming Time

October 11, 2008

Colorado State will be playing their homecoming game tomorrow at 1:30 against Texas Christian University.  The Horned Frogs have only lost one game this season against Oklahoma.  They lost that game 35 to 10 which was one of their closest games so far.  TCU beat San Diego State last week 41 to 7.

Texas has been destroying teams with their rushing.  Passing yardage is averaging just under their opponents, but when it comes to rushing they have totaled 1,480 yards compared to their competitions 134 yards.  The Rams must stop the Frog’s running game if they hope to have any chance of winning.  Despite their one loss, TCU has doubled their competitors’ total offensive yards this season.

The Frogs play pretty consistent quarters.  The team plays well and scores consistently in each quarter, but what has really hurt their opposition is that no team has scored on them in the fourth quarter.  With all of the points scored in the final quarter added up TCU has a total of 62 points to their competitions zero.  The Rams must keep up their intensity in the last quarter especially if they are ahead.

TCU has five strong runners on the team that each have put up a huge number of yards so far.  Marcus Jackson averages 59.6 yards a game and is leading the team with a total of 323 yards this season.

Marcus Jackson

Marcus Jackson

Joseph Turner averages 48.7 yards a game and has already scored eight touchdowns.

Colorado State tends to play their best in the second quarter and will definitely need to tomorrow.  Some of their best moments have occurred in the final quarter, but statistically the Rams allow the most points to be scored by their opposition in the fourth.  If they play that way tomorrow then it may turn out to be a long second half.

Rams Roll Over Rebels

October 5, 2008

With nearly 20,000 fans present, Hughes Stadium was anything but quiet as Colorado State put away UNLV 41 to 28.  The Rams were the first team to put points on the board as they got an early field goal, but the Rebels shot back with two touchdowns to end the first quarter on top 14 to 3.  Colorado State’s defense fought hard in the second and third quarters preventing the Rebels from scoring.  With 14 points in the second and 10 in the third, the Rams were fired up before entering the forth as they got closer to another victory.  The Rebels silenced the roar of the crowd early on in the final quarter as they scored two quick touchdowns which put them one point ahead with a little over six minutes left in the game.

The player of the game was Gartrell Johnson.  With nine seconds left, he scored his third touchdown of the game which put the Rams ahead for good.  However, Colorado State was not going to stop there.  The Rebels fumbled in the last few seconds, and John Mosure picked it up, ran seven yards and sealed the victory over UNLV 41-28.  Johnson finished the game rushing 191 yards.

Gartrell Johnson

UNLV was consistent in both their passing and rushing, but it was no match to the yards put up by Colorado State.  The Rams led in both passing and rushing.  They threw for 294 yards which was 121 more than the Rebels.  UNLV started off strong, but Colorado caught up in the middle and held on in the end to pull out an amazing victory.
